Startline, published by AMTDA GLOBAL LLC. Updated [EFFECTIVE DATE].

Startline builds a running plan for the race day you give it and for the pace you run now, then reads every session to you while you run, so the phone can stay in your pocket. Everything it builds and everything it records stays on your phone.

Starting out

  1. Open Startline. The first question is whether you can run for thirty minutes today, three days this week. Answer honestly — the plan is built on that answer.
  2. Give it your race day, whether you are running the full or the half, which days of the week you run, which of those is your long run, and whether you count in miles or in kilometers.
  3. Tell it what you have been running lately: the minutes in a typical week of the last four, your longest run of those four weeks, and the highest week you held for four weeks running in the last year. If you do not know one of them, tap the "I don't know" line next to it.
  4. Give it a pace to work from: either a recent race result, with the distance and the time, or your own estimate of your easy pace.
  5. Startline builds the whole block from today to race day. The home screen is This week: the seven days, one line each, today opened up. Whole plan shows every week to race day.
  6. On a run day, tap Start session, put your headphones in, and put the phone away. Startline reads the session to you as you go.

While a session is running

Pausing your plan

Life gets in the way of a block. To put the plan down for a while:

  1. From This week, tap the log button on any session to open How did it go?
  2. Tap Pause my plan at the bottom of that screen.
  3. The plan holds where it is. Nothing is deleted and nothing is lost.
  4. When you are back, open the same screen and tap Un-pause my plan. Startline picks the plan up from where you are now, not from where you would have been, and rebuilds the coming weeks around the gap.

A single session you did not run is not a pause. Log it as Skipped and the next week is rebuilt from what you actually did.

How the run log works

A run is saved from the first second, not at the end.

Deleting everything

Remove Startline from your phone and every piece of it goes: the plan, the weekly log, and every run with its route. There is no account to close and no request to send us, because none of it was ever anywhere but your phone.

A control inside Startline erases everything without removing the app: open the plan screen and use the row at the bottom, “Delete everything on this phone”. It asks you to confirm, then removes your plan, your weekly log, and every saved run with its route. It cannot be undone.

Questions runners ask

Do I need an account, or an internet connection?

Neither. There is no sign-up, no sign-in and no password. Startline builds your plan and runs your session on the phone itself, with no connection at all. You can run it in a place with no signal and nothing changes.

Will it talk over my music?

No. While a cue is spoken, Startline lowers whatever you are listening to for the length of the words and then lets it back up. It never pauses your music or your podcast. If you would rather have fewer words, the gear on the session screen turns off any kind of cue you do not want, one switch each.

Can I lock the screen and put the phone in my pocket?

Yes. That is what the app is built around. On Android, a session runs as a foreground service so it keeps counting and keeps speaking with the screen off, which is why you see the "Startline is recording your run" notification for the whole session; it goes away when you stop. If cues go quiet when you lock the phone, look at the battery settings for Startline — a phone that has decided the app should be put to one side in the background is the usual cause. Write to us with the make and model and we will help you find the setting.

Why does Startline want my location?

To measure how far you went and how fast, and to keep the route with the run. It only ever asks for the "while using the app" permission, it only turns location on while a session is running, and the route never leaves the phone.

What if I say no to location?

The session still starts and Startline still reads the whole thing to you. It records no distance and no route for that run, and you can type the minutes in when you log it.

The app closed in the middle of a run. Is that run gone?

No. The run was written to the phone the second you tapped Start. Open Startline again and the run is there, marked as interrupted, with the time it had reached. Log the session as usual.

Can I change to kilometers, or change my race day, after setup?

Your unit and your race day are set when you build the plan, and Startline speaks in one unit only, never both. Changing them afterwards is not in this version. What does change on its own is the plan itself: every week is rebuilt from what you logged the week before.

I missed a session. Do I have to do it later?

No. Log it as Skipped and carry on. Startline rebuilds the coming week around what you actually ran, so a missed session is answered by the next week rather than piled on top of it. For a longer break, use Pause my plan.

Does Startline read anything from my watch, or from Apple Health or Health Connect?

No. It does not connect to them, does not pair with a watch or a strap, and records nothing about your body. The only thing it measures is where the phone went and how long the session took.

What does it cost?

Nothing today. There is no purchase and no subscription in the app as it stands. If a paid plan is added later, the price and the renewal are shown on screen before you are asked to buy anything, and the terms spell out how it works.
